Humanity is in the midst of the greatest crisis in their evolution. Sharay is the one chosen to show the way forward and help humankind move through the fear and dark times of today's world. Born into a lineage of priestesses in modern day Glastonbury, England, Sharay's way is blocked by her jealous Aunt Phoebe, who uses black magic against her to steal her fortune and magical power. When Phoebe commits Sharay to a psychiatric ward and accuses her of murder, Sharay struggles with the temptation to fight Phoebe's vengeance with her own. Through the ancient Celtic ceremony of Beltaine, Sharay experiences profound sacred union with the Welshman Guethyn, who shows her how to open her heart. But Sharay must learn to transform her hatred for her aunt in order to claim the mystery held deep within her cells that will allow her to fulfill her destiny and prove that the ultimate magic is the power of love.

Young Sharay Kallah hears voices and has visions, which everyone dismisses as mental illness. But in truth, she's the latest in a long line of priestesses, in touch with the great Goddess and destined to be humanity's savior. Sharay's scheming Aunt Phoebe has her committed to a mental hospital, so she can take control of Sharay's inheritance (both financial and mystical). Can Sharay free herself, and understand her power, before the forces of darkness close in?"Chosen One" stories are a dime-a-dozen these days, but this one starts off strongly. Sharay's ordeals at the hospital are truly harrowing, and her escape is full of nail-biting suspense. Unfortunately, once she's taken under the wing of the old mage Dillon, the story slows to a crawl. Long descriptions of the history, theory, and practice of magic dominate the narrative, to the extent that it feels more like a textbook than a novel. Your mileage will vary, depending on how much interest you have in the topic, but I personally ended up skimming a lot.
The problem with stories based around a prophecy is that things tend to happen "just because". Sharay and Dillon's grandson Guethyn fall in love, not so much because they're two young people bonding in a stressful situation, but because they were lovers in a previous life, and thus "destined" to be together. The story takes a creepy turn when Dillon starts encouraging them to have sex as part of a magical ritual that will help unlock Sharay's power. And it gets worse when the author describes their ancestors metaphorically looking over their shoulders and giving them instructions as they go at it. It's meant to be a beautiful and empowering spiritual union, but all I could think is "ew".
It's not a terrible book, simply not my cup of tea. Folks who are into New Age spirituality will no doubt get more out of it.

Carry on the Flame Destiny Call Jodine Turner 9781934606292 Books Reviews
Jodine Turner has created a captivating story of the archetypal battle between good and evil, in both the inner and outer realities. The book takes us on a journey that offers an excellent reflection of the inner dynamics of healing and awakening to our true nature and calling. Powerful instruction is given where she speaks to moving toward our pain, into the heart, and feeling it in the heart. Her description of the 'black hole' within us, and how it works to undermine trust and create separation from self and those we love is very accurate. It serves as a mirror to evoke awareness of the subtle machinations of the black hole's shadow reflection within each of us. Jodine's book evokes awareness and offers important teachings for the collective awakening that is happening now.
I am eager to get on with her next book!
I'm afraid that I'm a bit ambiguous about this one. I liked some aspects, and thought that for a debut novel that the writing was reasonably good. But sometimes when a 'prophecy' is involved, the plotline suffers. It's just too easy to rely on that Prophecy in lieu of world building.
Characters were somewhat interesting (especially Aunt Phoebe), but for some unexplained reason, I just couldn't strum up much involvement or sympathy for them. I found myself skimming over the frequent chants, prophecies, and visions. Something just didn't grab me properly, and I'm just not sure that I can put my finger on it. I finished it, but wasn't really enthused about it, sorry.
This is a visionary fiction novel of tremendous depth and characterization for any age, a compelling story of a young woman coming into her own power, coming into living the life she was born to live. In a mythical, mystical adventure that takes you through Glastonbury, England and Wales Sharay's power is not worldly power in the traditional sense. It is the spiritual power of opening to know the love in her that is mightier than any sword to heal and transform not only herself, but the chaos of these times.
But here's the challenge She has to face not only formidable outside forces, but her own grief, loss and dark side to get there.
An orphan, she is labeled "insane" and institutionalized by her aunt, who remains a memorable antagonist throughout the novel. It is through a man she meets in that facility and his grandson that Sharay's transformational journey. This adventure also opens the door for her journeys to explore the alternate realities presented by the Goddess of the Stars and the Sea and Sharay's mentors.
Sharay's magical, mystical adventures, steeped in Celtic tradition and ritual, are all an invitation to step into her destiny as the "chosen one" in a lineage of priestesses and to accept love. As in lifetimes before, she is being asked to serve and support humanity, too, in their transition through times of great change and transformation.
If you have ever felt you have a calling or a mission in life that you resisted or if you are experiencing the challenges of stepping up to meet that call, Sharay's journey is yours. If you feel you are not listening to your most authentic heart and want to, Sharay's bumpy journey is yours.
This fast-paced good read is an important story for our times, because its message is about the power of love to heal and transform us, to empower us to do whatever we are called to do in this world. Each time Sharay is called to her destiny and opens or resists, she is given this opportunity.
We, too, are given many opportunities in our lifetime to answer the call of love, even when it is most difficult. If you, like me, long to read novels that explore and give you a direct experience of metaphysical subjects, alternate reality, the paranormal and of the divine feminine, this novel is for you.
